Trent puts dagger in Lakers playoff hopes

The Nipissing Lakers soccer squads were dealt crushing blows in their hopes of qualifying for the OUA East division playoffs as both the men and women suffered 1-0 defeats at the hands of the Trent Excalibur.

In the women’s game it was Trent’s Sarah Radford goal minutes in the second half that would prove to be the game winner as the home team prevailed with a narrow 1-0 victory.  The loss knocks the Lady Lakers into last place in the OUA East division standings with a record of 0-9-3 while Trent Improves to 1-9-2.

The Lady Lakers have been mathematically eliminated from the playoff picture however the young team will use the remaining four games to build towards next year.

On the men’s side the Lakers dropped their seventh game in a row as the Trent Excalibur put a serious dent in the Lakers playoff hopes.

Matthew Russell scored early and Josip Bosnjak collected the shutout as Trent improved to 4-5-1 on the season while the Lakers dropped to 1-8-1.

With only four games remaining and trailing Trent by nine points for the final playoff berth the climb will be a steep one indeed. The Lakers will need to collect victories at home this weekend and hope for a pair of losses by Trent to keep hope alive.

The Lakers play their final home games of the season on the weekend as they face RMC and Queen’s. Women kick things off at noon followed by the men at 2:15 p.m.  Should the weather not cooperate games will be played at the Omischl Sports Complex.
